Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana (BBBS-KY) has implemented an initiative, Rico’s Roundtable (RR), to address racial disparities in academic, disciplinary, economic, and health outcomes. This initiative involves monthly educational presentations made to youth of color, mentors, and parents on (1) behavior modeling, (2) self-awareness, (3) parenting, (4) health, and (5) environment. The Roundtable consists of 15 individuals from local organizations (e.g., black fraternities and sororities, 100 Black Men of Louisville, Links) who make these presentations. Our partnerships will help establish whether RR has a positive impact on black male youth through an examination of existing data and the creation of tools for future data collection. Such evidence would help (a) serve as a basis for obtaining external funding to sustain RR and (b) lead to the development of a successful curriculum for black youth males in addition to standard mentoring practices.
