The Humana Foundation awarded Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana a grant in 2012 to (a) support a pilot intergenerational mentoring program (called the Humana Legacy Program) to match at-risk youth with mentors aged 55 or older, (b) determine the most successful recruitment strategies for mentors 55 and older, and (c) evaluate whether these Legacy matches produced favorable health and wellbeing outcomes for mentors and favorable outcomes for youth. PIRE served as the grant evaluator and measured outcomes related to relationship development and strength, impacts on the health and wellbeing of youth, and impacts on the health and wellbeing of volunteer mentors.
