Researchers across PIRE, led by Mary Gordon (Center Director, PIRE Calverton), are engaged in the NIJ-funded 21st Century Policing Cross-Site Multi-Stakeholder Sentinel Event Review Project. The project involves a partnership between PIRE, 21st Century Policing (21CP) LLC, Strategic Applications International (SAI), and police departments. The work includes research, technical assistance, and coaching provided to assist teams in identifying root causes of sentinel events that can be mitigated to reduce or eliminate future similar critical events.
The President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing specifically recommended using the SER process to improve policing through well-researched demonstration projects. The final result should be a model that can be replicated as a quality improvement process that builds trust and legitimacy both internally and externally in a law enforcement agency.
PIRE staff on the project include Dr. Karen Friend from the Chapel Hill Center, and Dr. David Collins and Dr. Kyra Fritz from the Louisville Center.
