PIRE participates in Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, Coalition for a Smoke-Free Tomorrow, December 2018 Event

The conference, titled “Next Generation Tobacco: The Impact of E-Cigarettes on Kentucky’s Future Health,” focused on the recent explosion in youth and young adult use of Juul and other electronic cigarettes and the health impact of these products, as well as an update on federal proposals to restrict sales. Speakers provided updates on who else uses e-cigarettes, what’s in them and the role that flavors play in market growth. Panelists included:

  • Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar (Moderator): Overview of the health impact of e-cigarettes; introduction of panelists; moderate Q&A
  • Dr. Scott Weaver: E-cigarette flavors and impact on use, health
  • Dr. Audrey Darville: Duel use and the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, given the addictiveness of nicotine and e-cigarettes
  • Dr. Pat Purcell: Youth use and the gateway effect of e-cigarettes to using other tobacco products, including combustible cigarettes
  • Dr. Melissa Abadi: Marketing and messaging around e-cigarettes; use of e-cigarettes to smoke marijuana and other products
