Tonita Flowers is the Program Coordinator of TakeCare Durham and works with the PIRE-Louisville Center in Louisville, Kentucky. She has a broad background working as a parent and community liaison within the Durham school district as well as an advocate for parents and families with children with disabilities.
A native of Durham, North Carolina, Ms. Flowers has more than sixteen (16) years of experience in family and community organization and management. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Hispanic Studies from Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina. Ms. Flowers is also bilingual with a Spanish Language Interpretation and Translation certificate/diploma having served for 8 years as a Spanish Interpreter/Community Liaison and Community School Coordinator for Durham Public Schools. She has also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) and resided overseas in South Korea where she worked as a teacher to Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students. A passionate advocate for families with children with disabilities and special needs, Ms. Flowers has both personally and professionally been dedicated to planning and coordinating events that involve access to services and resources for families within the community. She shows a commitment to ensuring access to inclusive community support for all residents of Durham County.
Over the years, Tonita has seamlessly blended her knowledge of languages, culture, and the importance of early intervention and education to assist families with advocating for their children in an educational environment. With a strong sense of cultural awareness within the Durham community and continuing to serve as a beacon of welcome to many refugee and immigrant families, Tonita has an immense desire to continue to broaden her awareness, compassion, and understanding of the mental health and overall well-being of the community. She feels that everyone has a diverse perspective on life and their own personal well-being and health. With this in mind, she wants to continue to encourage and foster a greater understanding of the community resources that are available to residents so that everyone has the chance to be the best version of themselves. With her expertise in family and community engagement/management, Tonita has taken on the role as Program Coordinator. She is passionate about creating a safe, healthy, and sustainable program within the Durham community and is excited to work on the TakeCare Durham Pilot Program.
Ms. Flowers has been working with PIRE since December 2023.
